Incident
Shot five times by two men using revolvers to fire through the front window of his house on the Newport Road in his home town, when he entered the dining room to wind up the clock and adjust it to British Summer Time before going to bed.
Despite being tended to by a specialist doctor from Dublin and two local doctors, District Inspector Milling died the next day having lost too much blood.
He had been married for 14 years and had had three children, only two of whom were still living at the time of his death.
