Incident

Constable Martin was shot and killed as he attempted to investigate two strange men on a farm near Carnegie. The owner of the farm came to Carnegie and told Constable Martin he had seen two men hanging around his gas pumps. As Constable Martin and the owner approached the men they opened fire. Constable Martin returned fire wounding both suspects before one killed him with a shotgun blast. One was apprehended at the scene. Constable Martin's killer was found an hour later slumped over the wheel of his truck, a few miles away, suffering from two gunshot wounds.

Both suspects, 26 and 32, were charged with murder. The 32-year-old killer was convicted of first degree manslaughter and sentenced to 35 years.

Constable Martin had served with the Carnegie Police Department for 2 months, and is survived by his wife and two children.
