Incident

Deputy Sheriff John Walter was killed in an automobile accident en route to Richmond, Virginia, with another deputy. The other deputy attempted to pass a vehicle on Route 17, near Berea in Stafford County, and struck another vehicle head-on. Deputy Walter was killed instantly. The deputy's vision was obstructed at the time because of heavy rain. Deputy Walter was a United States Marine Corps Vietnam veteran who served with the Fauquier County Sheriff's Office.

He was survived by his wife and parents.
