Killed during a struggle in which he was repeatedly stabbed, inflicting a fatal heart wound, as he attempted to arrest a thief he had caught in a factory yard in Farnworth in the middle of the night.

Posthumously awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Brave Conduct.
