Incident

Patrolman Jerry Trimmer succumbed to injuries he received near Laburnun Avenue and Harvie Road while responding to an assistance call at 11:45 p.m. His patrol vehicle spun out of control at the curve of Laburnum Avenue and crashed into a field upside down. Rescue crews had to cut Patrolman Trimmer out of his seatbelt to remove him from the patrol car. Patrolman Trimmer was transported to the Medical College of Virginia (present day VCU Medical Center), where he was pronounced deceased from internal injuries. Patrolman Trimmer was not traveling at an excessive speed. An investigation into the crash revealed that 32 crashes had occurred in 20 months at the same intersection, and 20 of those crashes involved drivers losing control of their vehicles in incidents similar to Patrolman Trimmer's. Investigators discovered that an access plate to underground utilities had worn smooth, and a car could lose traction when driving over it in a particular way. Patrolman Trimmer was a United States Air Force veteran who served in the Air Force police and security forces. He had served with the Henrico County Police Department for over one year.

Survivors

He was survived by his wife, two sons, his parents, three sisters, and three brothers.

Tributes

I served 1985 to 1993. You served too, before the badge - different uniform, same idea. You go where you are sent and you do not get to pick the call.
Patrolman Trimmer gave the Henrico County Police Department 1 year.
Thank you for your service to the Richmond community, and for your service before it. Gone but never to be forgotten.
Rest easy, brother.
