Chief Hicks was flown to a hospital in Creve Couer, where he remained unconscious until succumbing to severe head injuries.

Chief Hicks was a U.S. Army Reserves and U.S. Navy veteran and had served in law enforcement for 25 years. Prior to joining the Leadwood Police Department, he had served with the St. Francois County Sheriff's Office, Ste. Genevieve County Sheriff's Office, and the Elvins Police Department.

Tributes

I served 1985 to 1993. You served too, before the badge - different uniform, same idea. You go where you are sent and you do not get to pick the call.
Chief of Police Hicks gave the Leadwood Police Department 25 years.
Thank you for your service to the Leadwood community. Thank you for your service before it. Gone but never to be forgotten.
Rest easy, brother.
