Incident

Guard Jerry Condo succumbed to injuries sustained two days earlier during an escape attempt from the Centre County Jail.

He was locking prisoners in their cells at about 8:30 pm when two inmates rushed from the bathroom and attacked him. The inmates violently beat him over his head causing serious injuries. They then took his keys and fled from the jail along with three other prisoners.

Four of the escapees were arrested several days later. The two men who attached Guard Condo were convicted of murder in September 1904.

Guard Condo was a Civil War veteran. He was survived by his wife and several children.
