Incident

Constable Jere McCheane succumbed to stab wounds sustained at 11:15 pm the previous night when he attempted to arrest a man at a tenement house at 13th Street and Webster Street. The man was convicted of murder and sentenced to 10 years in prison. On April 18th, 1871, he and nine other inmates escaped from the Nebraska Penitentiary.

Survivors

Constable McCheane was survived by his wife, six daughters, and a son by a previous wife.
