Incident
Police Officer Jared Franks was killed in a vehicle crash at the intersection of South Elm-Eugene Street and Webster Road while responding to a robbery in progress call.
His patrol car collided with another patrol car at the intersection and then struck a house. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Officer Franks had served with the Greensboro Police Department for 2-1/2 years and was assigned to the District Two Patrol Division.
We lost you 6 years ago, today; and the loss is still fresh. You grew up listening to me, your Uncle Dale, and your dad telling our police service “war stories” around the dinner table. You were still in college when I got you to help with one of the classes I was teaching in the Greensboro Police Academy. You came to talk to me about putting your application in, but I knew you had already made up your mind. You wanted to live a life of service, and decided on law enforcement instead of the military. And you jokingly told me you had decided on the Greensboro Police Department to follow in the family footsteps, to “ride the family coattails.” But my nephew, you didn’t need any coattails, and you found your own footsteps. You were determined to charge in wherever you could, and help whoever you could. You followed your heart and lived your faith; and though you are no longer in this world, your example shines on. We miss you still, and love you always.
