Shortly after midnight, PC Campbell was on patrol and entered a back court at 637 Great Eastern Road, Glasgow. There he came across a man he found suspicious and coupled with the close proximity to a jewellery shop he went to apprehend the man, having formed the suspicion that he may be a housebreaker.

As PC Campbell approached him the man produced a revolver and fired twice, with one bullet hitting James in the neck. The sound of gunfire attracted attention and PC Campbell was found seriously injured with the gunshot wound. He was taken into a dwelling by residents while another summoned help. He was then taken to the Royal Infirmary where he managed to provide a description of the assailant.

James was married with three children and having served for twenty years he was the recipient of numerous meritorious awards.
