Incident

Deputy Sheriff Hinton Sasely was shot and killed as he and several other deputies attempted to raid a home where illegal gambling was taking place shortly before midnight.

As the deputies approached the home one of the men drew a gun and opened fire, killing Deputy Sasely. The man was taken into custody and held in a cabin overnight. The next day as the sheriff and other deputies were taking him to the county jail they were confronted by a mob, who took forcibly took the man and lynched him from a tree.
