Incident

Deputy Sheriff Harry Jones succumbed to a gunshot sustained two months earlier after he and the sheriff responded to a Follansbee home after a woman called to report her husband was threatening her.

When the officers arrived at the location the man opened fire, wounding Deputy Jones in the leg. The sheriff transported him back to Wellsberg and then returned to the scene with additional deputies, state policemen, and citizens. Over 1,200 round were fired before the subject was taken into custody.

Deputy Jones' wound developed gangrene and he died as a result on February 19th, 1923.

The subject was convicted of Deputy Jones' murder and sentenced to the State Penitentiary.

Deputy Jones had previously served with the Follansbee Police Department for 1-1/2 years.

Survivors

He was survived by his wife.
