Incident
Patrolman Harry Akins was dispatched to answer a domestic call at a residence near Montgomery Crossroads on November 21, 1962. When he reached the residence and entered the home, Akins realized that the barricaded person in the bedroom was someone he knew. As he attempted to talk to the individual through the closed and locked door, the individual fired a shotgun blast through the door, fatally wounding him. On February 27, the suspect, 35, was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to 18 to 20 years. He was paroled on December 11, 1969.
