Officer Harland Manes was shot and killed when he arrived to investigate a crash at 1:15 AM at Beulah Avenue and Kenmore Boulevard in Akron. One of the vehicles involved in the collision contained members of the Pretty Boy Floyd Gang, who were driving a stolen vehicle. One of the men shot and killed Officer Manes when he arrived at the scene. The trigger man, who was an escaped convict, was arrested and executed for the murder. His accomplice escaped. Officer Manes was a United States Army WWI veteran and Purple Heart recipient. He had served with the Akron Police Department for six years. Survivors include his wife and parents.
