Incident

Deputy Sheriff Guy Massey was shot and killed when he and his son, who was the constable of Zebulon, attempted to arrest a fugitive near the intersection of Gill Street and Highway 97. The man began to struggle with the officers and shot Deputy Massey. Deputy Massey's son was able to return fire and kill the suspect. The son then drove Deputy Massey to a hospital where he succumbed to his wound the following day.
