George Stuart Wilson
Incident
Game Warden George Wilson was shot and killed while he and several Montgomery County deputies searched for the murderer of Police Officer Albert Sansom, of the Montgomery Police Department.
The officers came upon a group of men and women walking along Mt. Meigs Road, six miles east of Montgomery, and stopped to talk to them. One of the men was standing behind the others with one hand in a pocket. As Game Warden Wilson approached him the man suddenly produced a gun and opened fire, wounding one of the deputies.
Game Warden Wilson began struggling with the man and they fell into a ditch. During the struggle Game Warden Wilson was shot in the head and neck. The subject was able to flee on foot. Game Warden Wilson and the deputy were taken to a nearby hospital where he died the next day.
The suspect was apprehended, convicted of first degree murder, and sentenced to life. He was paroled February 28, 1940.
As a result of the officer's murders the national guard was deployed to subdue mob violence. A man thought to be withholding information about Officer Samsom's killer was lynched. Another man was shot and killed and several men were whipped and beaten.
Game Warden Wilson had served as a game warden in Montgomery County for one year.

He was survived by his wife and two children.
