Incident

Killed while on night patrol on the Ongar Road between Stapleford Abbots and Romford when, as he spoke to the driver of a car he had cause to stop, the passenger, without warning, shot him in the head at close range. PC Gutteridge was not aware that the men, who then fled the scene, had earlier stolen the car.
