Incident

Sergeant Gene Christopher was shot and killed as he attempted to assist two officers eject two patrons at Mayorga's Cafe in Kingsville. As the officers struggled with the men one managed to take his gun and shot him. The suspects, brother and stepbrother, was arrested by the other officers. One, 34, was charged with murder and the other, 37, assault to murder On July 1, 1958, the killer was convicted of murder and sentenced to life. Sergeant Christopher was a US Navy veteran who served five years during the Korean War.

Survivors

Sergeant Christopher was survived by his wife, 2-year old son, and 14-year-old sister.
