City Marshal Eugene Cargell was shot and killed as he led a posse in pursuit of a murder suspect.

He and the posse had trapped the murderer of Grady County Sheriff D.W. (Doc) Tyus at the man's uncle's home near Tallahassee, Florida. As they stormed the home he was shot and killed by the suspect's uncle.

The uncle surrendered to Florida authorities a few hours later. Sheriff Tyus' killer escaped and was never apprehended.
