Incident

PC Thompson had been patrolling near St. George’s brewery, between Church Lane and Union Street, when he was drawn to a street row near the fire station. As he moved through the crowd he was set upon and pushed to the ground. During the struggle he was able to summon assistance by blowing his police whistle. Other Constables arrived to see three men atop the officer but they all made off and, at that point, PC Thompson realised he had been stabbed.
