Detective Duane Winkelman was shot and killed while conducting a routine check of a rail yard in East St. Louis, Illinois.

During the check, he and his partner observed a group of men stealing from a boxcar. Detective Winkelman chased one of the subjects through several neighborhood backyards and into the parking lot of a tavern in the Rush City neighborhood. The subject opened fire on him in the parking lot, striking him in the chest with a blast from a shotgun.

Detective Winkelman was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He had only served with the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad Police Department for one month but had previously served with the Rock Island Railroad Police Department and Kansas City Police Department, Missouri.

Det. Winkleman, On today, the 50th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice-not just as a Law Enforcement Officer but for our Country as well when you served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. And to your Family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

Tributes

I served 1985 to 1993. You served too, before the badge - different uniform, same idea. You go where you are sent and you do not get to pick the call.
Detective Winkelman served with the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad Police Department.
Thank you for your service to the Chicago community, and for your service before it. Gone but never to be forgotten.
Rest easy, brother.
