Incident

Detective Donald McCormick and Sergeant Edward Crowley were shot and killed while investigating a domestic disturbance at 2343 Maypole Avenue. They had gone to the home and were met at the door by the wife. As the officers began to look around, they found the man standing in a closet in his underwear, and Sergeant Crowley instructed him to get dressed. As he was sitting on the couch getting dressed, the offender pulled out a revolver from under the couch. The subject and the officers exchanged shots, and both Patrolman McCormick and Sergeant Edward Crowley were killed. The man was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and executed in the electric chair on October 17th, 1952. Patrolman McCormick was a United States Navy Reserve World War II veteran and served with the Chicago Police Department for over 24 years.

Tributes

I served 1985 to 1993. You served too, before the badge - different uniform, same idea. You go where you are sent and you do not get to pick the call.
Detective McCormick gave the Chicago Police Department 24 years.
Thank you for your service to the Chicago community, and for your service before it. Gone but never to be forgotten.
Rest easy, brother.

— S. Vincent Anthony, U.S. Army 1985-1993
