Incident

On July 20, 2012 Cst. Derek Pineo, of Wilkie District Detachment in Saskatchewan, was killed in a single vehicle accident when his police cruiser collided with a moose on Highway 14 just west of Wilkie. Sgt. Paul Dawson told a news conference in Regina that he didn’t know whether Pineo was responding to a call when the collision occurred. At the time, he said, there was a mischief complaint and a call about a possible impaired driver. Cst. Pineo was declared dead at the scene. Pineo, who joined the RCMP in August 2007, spent five years at the Nipawin detachment and transferred to Wilkie last month. He was born in Halifax and grew up in Fall River, graduating from C.P. Allen High School in Bedford. He studied French Immersion at Universite Sainte-Anne and completed a corrections officer course at Scotia Career Academy. Cst. Derek Pineo leaves behind a wife and three children. Our Condolences go out his family, friends, and colleagues. As we start 2026, we can look back and note that we have been very fortunate to not have lost anyone in Canada to a Line of Duty Death (LODD) these last two years.
