Incident

On Saturday January 17, 2015, at 3:00 AM, RCMP Cst. David Wynn and Aux. Cst. Derek Bond were investigating a stolen vehicle found in the parking lot of the Apex Casino in South West St. Albert Alberta. They had just reviewed videotape and were leaving the casino when the officers encountered the subject inside the casino. The subject pulled out a concealed shotgun and shot both officers, hitting Cst. Wynn in the head and Aux. Cst. Bond in the mid section. Both officers received significant injuries and were unable to return fire. The suspect fled the scene but was later found deceased inside a nearby residence. Aux. Cst. Bond was released from hospital the next day. On January 21, Cst. David Wynn succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. Cst. Wynn joined the RCMP in 2006 after serving his Bridgewater, Nova Scotia community for 10 years as a paramedic. His first posting out of Regina was to St. Albert Detachment, Alberta. He is survived by his wife, Shelly, and his three sons. Our condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues. As we start 2026, we can look back and note that we have been very fortunate to not have lost anyone in Canada to a Line of Duty Death (LODD) these last two years.
