Shot and killed after confronting a suspect at Old Malton during a manhunt for the killer of Constable David Ian Haigh. The man drew a gun and fired at Sergeant Winter and then pursued him as the officer tried to escape, shooting him three times, including twice in the head, one shot from point blank range.
