Incident

Undersheriff Fugate was shot and killed while negotiating with a hostage taker at a local bar. Undersheriff had entered the establishment to try to talk the man into surrendering. The suspect told him his gun was in the kitchen. Undersheriff Fugate could not locate it and returned to the man to ask where it was again. The man pulled a gun from behind the bar and shot him. The suspect was sentenced to life at hard labor and later died in prison.
