Railroad Detective Charles Lowery was shot and killed in the Hazelton rail yards in Youngstown, Ohio, while he and another officer searched for boxcar thieves.

They were checking boxcars when they encountered two men. One of the men opened fire, killing Detective Lowery and wounding the other officer before escaping.

Two men matching their descriptions were arrested after being seen on an Erie Railroad train in Cleveland, Ohio, the following day.

Detective Lowery was survived by his wife. He was buried in Venango Cemetery in Crawford County, Pennsylvania.
