Incident
Patrolman Carl Hauck was shot and killed when he told a group of men drinking and loitering at Gest Street and Harriett Street (now Dalton Avenue) to disperse. The men were part of a gang that was terrorizing the area through robberies and intimidation. Two of the men attacked Patrolamn Hauck, and one of them shot him four times. Patrolman Hauck returned one shot, striking one of the men in the arm. The suspect, who was on parole at the time, was arrested but found not guilty due to a lack of evidence.
