Incident

K9 Axel was inadvertently shot and killed while his handler was monitoring a group of wild hogs crossing the roadway in the Kisatchie National Forest.

Around 2:00 a.m., as wild hogs were traveling across the road, the officer exited his vehicle. In the dark, he heard panting and an animal coming towards him; he shot the animal, thinking it was a wild hog.

The officer was placed on administrative leave.

K9 Axel had served with the Grant Parish Sheriff's Office for seven years.
