Incident

City Marshal August Hampe succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained the previous day after being attacked by a man whom he had arrested for being drunk in public the previous week.

The man returned to the city, located Marshal Hampe at the Post Office, and attacked him. Marshal Hampe was knocked to the ground and kicked. He drew his pistol and shot the man in the leg. The man then drew a pistol and shot Marshal Hampe several times, inflicting fatal wounds.

The county sheriff arrested the subject, who was charged with murder. He was convicted of Marshal Hampe's murder and subsequently sentenced to life in prison.

Marshal Hampe was a Confederate Army veteran of the Civil War.

Survivors

He was survived by his wife and six children.
