Incident

Policeman Archie Cruse was shot and killed by a robbery suspect on Towne Avenue between 5th and 6th Streets in Los Angeles. The suspect was later arrested in Seattle, Washington, and extradited back to California to stand trial for the officer's murder. Policeman Cruse was transferred to White Memorial Hospital., where he succumbed to his wounds. The 46-year-old subject was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in Folsom Prison. On May 21, 1936, he stabbed to death a fellow inmate. He died in prison in 1956. Policeman Cruse was a United States WWI Army veteran and had served with the Los Angeles Police Department for over one year. He was survived by his wife, son, father, and sister. He is buried at the Evergreen Cemetery, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California. The LAPD Street Sign memorializing Officer Cruze is located east of Towne Avenue, between 5th and 6th Streets.
