Incident
Constable King died shortly after suffering a head injury while struggling with a prisoner in the city jail at Excelsior Springs.
Constable King and a night policeman were attempting to put the prisoner into a cell as the man violently resisted. During the struggle, Constable King's head was knocked against the iron bars of the cell. The two officers were finally able to get the prisoner into the cell.
Constable King walked home and began to feel sick. A doctor was called to the scene and shortly after he arrived, Constable King began having convulsions. He died a short time later from a cerebral hemorrhage caused by the head wound.
The suspect was found to be insane and taken to the state asylum in St. Joseph, Missouri.
Constable King had served in law enforcement for approximately 10 years. He was survived by his wife, son, two daughters, and five siblings. His son, who was a Clay County deputy at the time, was appointed to the position of constable after his death.
