Incident

Deputy Sheriff Amos Forbes was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a man for assaulting his wife.

Deputy Forbes was waiting for the subject to return to his wife's home. When the man arrived around 5:00 a.m. and approached the man, the subject shot him twice. He died within 30 minutes.

The man who shot him was arrested and charged with murder. His first trial ended in a mistrial with a deadlocked jury in 1882.
