Incident

Angel Esquerete joined the New York City Police Department on 25 January 1982 and was promoted to detective on 22 September 1989. He served with the 19th Precinct Detective Squad in Manhattan, carrying shield 937.

After the attacks of 11 September 2001 he worked in the rescue and recovery at the World Trade Center. He retired from the 19th Squad on 31 January 2002. He died in August 2022 of illnesses he contracted from that work, and his death was recognized as in the line of duty. He was survived by his wife and four children.

September 11, 2001 - The Years After

He is one of 600 officers honored here, and one of 451 at New York City Police Department.

The most recent of these deaths was October 24, 2025.

Officers who worked the search, rescue, and recovery at the World Trade Center site breathed contaminated air for weeks and months afterward. Many developed cancers and respiratory disease, and they have gone on dying of it ever since.

Seventy-two officers were killed on the morning itself. Hundreds more have died in the years that followed. They are honored here together, because the same attack killed them all. With some it simply took longer.
