Incident

Erle M. Thompson worked as a mail clerk before he joined the New York City Police Department on 27 December 1960. His first assignment was the Tactical Patrol Force. At the time of his death he was assigned to the Taxi and Truck Unit of the 114 Detective Squad.

On 20 February 1971, while technically off duty, Detective Thompson went to the Queens home of his sister, Vicky, after she called him to say that she and her husband, Mark, were arguing. When he arrived, his brother-in-law was trying to leave with the couple's child. According to the official police report, as Detective Thompson tried to make sure his sister was safe, his 21-year-old brother-in-law shot him in the chest with a .38-caliber Smith & Wesson revolver, killing him.

Detective Thompson was 34 years old and had served ten years. He was one of ten New York City police officers killed in the line of duty in 1971. He was survived by his wife and their two daughters.
