Incident

Joseph Guarnieri was a detective of the 39th Precinct in Manhattan, the area that is today the 23rd Precinct. He had once before been shot in the line of duty, needed several operations to recover, and went back to work.

On 2 April 1914 he and his partner, Lieutenant George Haerle, went looking for William Horgan, who was wanted for shooting a witness in a criminal case against his son. They found him in a tenement at 1880 Second Avenue, and Horgan shot and killed Detective Guarnieri. Lieutenant Haerle shot and killed Horgan. Both officers were awarded the department's Medal of Honor.

Detective Guarnieri left his wife and three small children. The medical bills from his earlier wound had left the family nearly penniless.

Survivors

He was survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.
